Trojans
Checklist for Trojan protection.
- Make sure that your operating system is patched and up-to-date.
For Windows, visit the
Microsoft update web site regularly.
- Acquire an anti-virus software and keep it up to date.
- Acquire an anti-Trojan software and keep it up to date.
- Don't download files from a site unless you are 100% sure of its legitimacy.
- If you receive email from someone you don't know, don't open it. Just delete!
- If the email is forwarded and contains an attachment (jokes, cartoons, anything), don't open it.
Just delete it!
- Only open up attachments YOU ASKED FOR. If you receive an email from someone you know and it has
an attachment, send an email back to check what it is. Check with them first about the content.

- If you receive an email from someone you know and it has an attachment, scan it first.
- Think of using web based email which automatically scans attachments.
- Don't respond to an email that claims to alert you to a virus or Trojan, even from a friend. The alert
is most likely a hoax or can contain a virus itself. And don't forward it to any of your friends!
- Beware of hidden file extensions.
- Disable the automatic preview of files or email. Disable this feature in Outlook, otherwise
the choice of looking at an email is taken out of your hands.
- Don't use the Kazaa peer-to-peer file sharing network. Kazaa is a known conduit for Trojan software.
