The Internet stabbed Jan Smith in the back on Feb 6, 1998 when her computer was attacked by a computer virus. It read her address list for Outlook and mailed a message to everyone on it. Stanley Freeberg wasn't so lucky. The virus that attacked his computer on April 12, 1999 wiped out his whole drive and the project that he had been working on for 18 months. There is a good chance that you have already had a virus and a better chance that someone you know has also been infected.
OK, we know that viruses are bad karma and can ruin your day. If you are infected with a virus, panic now, then read how to clean your machine. If you just want a checklist of how to protect yourself, read (and implement) the virus checklist. It is short and sweet. For a list of software that protects your machine, read virus cleaning software. If you want to know which viruses are tearing up the Internet right now, check out the top virus page. Because malicious software comes in different flavors, check out the Viruses, Worms and Trojans page for a description of them. If you want to know what can be infected on your computer, check out the What can be infected? page. Useful information that is not found elsewhere on these virus pages can be found on the Virus Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.
